Juicy Late Summer Read..The Recessionistas by Alexandra Lebenthal

Review from the publisher:
It's the day after Labor Day 2008, and the bottom is about to drop out of the economy. Hedge fund owner, John Cutter is in the process of an ugly divorce and nearly in financial ruin, except for the assets he is hiding from his wife Mimi in the Cayman Islands. When he concocts a scheme to redeem himself, he enlists Lehman Brothers investment banker Blake Somerset as an accomplice. Blake is ripe for recruitment given that he too is on the verge of being in dire financial straits given Lehman's decline and imminent bankruptcy. Blake's socialite wife Grigsby is barely aware of her changing world to begin with, and has no idea of ther perilous situation her husband is about to enter into. As Autumn unfolds, Grigsby fairytale life starts to unwind. Meanwhile, John and Blake's scheme comes to light when street-smart Renee Parker begins her new position as John's executive assistant. Convinced something is amiss, she enlists her friend Sasha Silver, CEO of Silver Partners to help decipher what is happening. This story of expulsion from a modern-day Garden of Eden captures what happens when economic decline spells ruin for Manhattan's pampered elite.

I have been seeing the reviews for this book popping up everywhere..it is now on my Amazon list! Click here to order. Any other good suggestions????

Newport Tour Guide

Having someone come to visit me in Newport made me put my tour guide thinking cap on for the first time. BFF Meg came to visit me from North Carolina last week. She has been listening to me talk about the fabulousness of Newport for so many summers, she wanted to see if for herself. We spent Tuesday in Boston checking out Charles and Newbury Street, the Public Garden and more. Tara and Shannon met us for lunch at the Paramount..yum. I am certainly not a Boston expert, so I did the best I could...
Meg and I with the Silver Man in the Garden

We arrived in Newport in the late afternoon. It happened to be unreasonably hot so we got ready and headed straight out for a driving tour and then to dinner at the Barking Crab.

Wednesday, we hit Bellevue and Thames for some shopping, stopping for lunch at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. For dinner we chose the Cooke House, which did not disappoint, was so fun and delicious.

We got up early on Thursday and the weather completely cooled off. We went walking on the Cliff Walk and then drove into the gates of Rough Point to see Doris Duke's mansion tour. When you drive in, the first thing you see in addition to her beautiful home is her camel topiaries. They are so funny.

Meg and I ended up having our own private tour and our guide was a smidge on the eccentric side. I think we were hoping for more of a People Magazine-type tour and we got the National Geographic tour instead. When Meg tried to ask for some more juicy details having just seen the recent movie about her life, our guide stiffened up and obviously was very uncomfortable sharing details of Miss Duke that were of a more personal nature..hilarious. She also couldn't help but break into a sing-songy voice when sharing certain facts about the house. I swear, I thought I was going to bust out laughing, but managed to hold it in until we left the tour.

on to a yummy lunch at 41 North...with the amazing weather and the beautiful view, this place is just fabulous. For the afternoon...the beach with some friends. Most of my roommates came back into town and we went to Perro Salado for dinner.

Friday morning, we drove to Boston with Brooke and made a couple of pit stops on the way. One very important stop was the Matouk outlet. If I hadn't painted my room light blue, I would have changed the whole thing and bought this Lulu DK duvet.

It was less than $100 and so pretty..this one below was there was well. Love, love love..

Meg got to see a little more of Boston-the North End and Downtown on the way to lunch at Stephanie's on Newbury. Tara met us there and then it was time to say goodbye! I maneuvered the drive to the airport, then to Shannon's to pick up my borrowed a/c and then got really adventurous and used the GPS to get myself to Beadworks in Cambridge. The Beadworks location conveniently located on Newbury closed, so I had to try this location. I hit the jackpot and found some amazing chain, so my trip was successful. I need to buy one of those Garmin GPS things, it was so easy to use and very portable.
Now that I am a seasoned tour guide, it is almost time for me to go. If someone wants to come for a last minute visit, let me know!

Perfect Weekend in Newport

I am still recovering from the non-stop action of my crazy weekend. The weather her is so fickle, Thursday morning we woke up early and it was unbelievable..in the 70's and blue skies. Fast forward to the weekend, and the heat set in and as I have mentioned many times, there isn't much air conditioning going on. Friday, I spent the day in Boston walking around and giving Meg a quick tour before she left and then did a little window shopping. Brooke and I drove home in the pouring rain and made it just in time to go out with the girls. We decided to try something new and go to a restaurant we pass by all the time. There wasn't that many people there but we ordered a bunch of appetizers and cocktails and had the best time.

Next stop..the West Deck. Not much going on there so we headed to the Dock Side. There, we ran into a bachelor party and spent the rest of the night hanging out with them. The party ended up on our roof deck till all hours.

Saturday, we headed to the beach. It was a scorcher, but so beautiful to be out there. I have become a huge fan of the umbrella, able to get sun and then when you get too hot, you just slide your chair underneath and it is a whole different situation. We left the beach right before the thunderstorm rolled in and headed home. We made plans to meet our bachelor party friends later on.

We got ready for another hot night out and we ended up having a blast. I can't seem to stop taking pictures from above, thinking it is always a good thing at the time, but really should let someone else take it. I am now thinking that this stems from 3 years ago, at the same place as these pictures were taken, I handed my favorite camera to someone who was a little incapacitated and he dropped it on the floor, and it was never the same again-or I should say RUINED. Boo hoo.

Me and Shannon...

Me and new friend Sid...

The only bummer of the weekend??...favorite Gucci shoes that melted down at the same time for both feet! Isn't that the strangest thing? I had to walk home barefoot mourning the possible death of these beauties. They are headed straight to Gucci when I get home. I hope they can work some Italian magic on them.

I was able to talk everyone into going to my favorite breakfast place on Sunday. No beach that day, but we all re-grouped and amazingly made it out again last night! Denise and I walked home early and I was secretly planning to be on the couch at 11pm to watch the second showing of Mad Men and guess what?? Our cable DOES NOT HAVE the Mad Men channel!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? Of course no one else in the house even watches it, so I will have to find someone at home that DVR'd it and catch up then.

My big week ahead? Making jewels, working on website, working remotely from my part time job and making more jewelry. My time is flying by here and I am trying to soak it all in before I head back down South. Excellent shopping posts to come later this week!

M. I. A.

Yikes!! MIA and not the airport code for Miami, but clearly missing in action. Meg coming to visit and my search for an air conditioner has kept me super busy. I dropped off Meg yesterday in Boston and picked up a window a/c for my room, so last night I slept in my chilly room very happy. Will post later with more details but wanted to say hello! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer and their weekend! xo kp

I Heart Air Conditioning

Well, things are going great up here, but it is a littie warm! The a/c window unit in my bedroom broke the week before I got up here..problem #1. All the stores sold out of window units due to the CRAZY heat lately..problem #2. I might be reporting later that I have borrowed a car and driven all over Rhode Island in search for the $99 window unit that eludes me on my vacation. Fingers Crossed. More later..

My Welcome Back

After another CRAZY travel day Saturday, I made it back up to Newport around lunchtime. When I got dropped off and walked up to the house, this was waiting for me on the door!! So sweet, all my roommates signed it and now it is perched by the door inside. We had a very busy weekend going to the beach and going out at night. Today, it rained all day and we consoled ourselves at Tito's Cantina for dinner with Brooke.

Tomorrow, my trip to Boston to pick up Meg at the airport. She has never been to Newport, so I am so excited to show her around and introduce her to all my friends up here. We will do a Mansion tour, go to the beach, 41 North, the Cooke House and much more.

The house we rented this year does not have DVR..I can't tell you how annoying it is not to be able to pause a live show to answer the phone or tape shows..but I can survive 2 weeks without. Ugh..where are my priorities???

T.G.I.F.

There is a reason this little acronym has been around for so long. TGIF..thank God it's Friday. I am so happy today is Friday, it has been a long week and I am leaving tomorrow for my 2 weeks in Newport. I have packed a bunch of things, shipped a few boxes and think I am ready to go!

Looking forward to many days at the beach...

Many walks on the cliff walk...

Many days with two of my favorite peeps..

Yummy dinners at the Cooke House...

lots of shopping..and blog reporting..

and much, much more! I am finally having a real visitor for the first time in 4 summers. Meg is coming to visit next week, so I will be back in Julie McCoy mode (this happens every so often) and can't wait. I hope everyone is having a nice summer!!! xo

Rizzoli & Isles

All the good shows are over for the year and I am desperate for new material. Shocking as it may seem, I never watched Laguna Beach, The Hills or The City, thinking down the road I would rent them all and watch then one after the other. So, I was excited to see TNT's new show Rizzoli & Isles very heavily promoted for the last month, and I was so hoping it would be good...and it was!

The previews were funny, I love Angie Harmon (her Law & Order years were my favorite)but couldn't place who the actress that plays her partner was. She looked familiar but it wasn't until I was watching the premier that it hit me...she was Gretchen Witter from Dawson's Creek!!!

This show will follow one of my favorite summer shows, The Closer, so at least there will be 2 good shows on until Fall. The Real Housewives of New Jersey is getting over the top these days. Can you imagine what the reunion will be like? How will they sit in the same room? Maybe they will have Danielle via sattelite for her protection!

Blogging=free therapy?

Writing in a blog almost daily for over 3 years means more and more secrets start to spill out onto the computer screen. I have shared some pretty telling information about myself and am not sure I didn't send a few readers running in the opposite direction. It could be considered a form of therapy, all this writing. Very inexpensive therapy...

If I were on a therapist's couch, one thing that would definitely come up is Compulsion..what drives me to buy things I don't need, but can't seem to walk away from? I can think of 3 examples of this problem immediately.

1. Rolled up for over 6 years now, absolutely beautiful wrapping paper that I fell in love with on site. It is pink with white branches and pink birds. My first thought was, I would paper the background of a bulletin board and paint the sides white. So, that hasn't happened yet, but at $6.50 a sheet (I bought all they had-7 sheets), I am just waiting to use it for something fabulous. I know for sure that if I hadn't bought it that day, this paper would have haunted me.

2. Plastic cups...I have mentioned my obsession with the perfect plastic cup many times on this blog but it hit a certain peak while visiting my darling friend Corey in East Hampton one summer. (the actual trip to EH is for another blog post some day..very amusing) We were shopping around and went into The Monogram Shop. I almost died in there..so many wonderful things and then I spotted the most adorable frosted plastic cups with either BEACH or POOL written on them in a variety of colors. I scooped up 25 of the beach cups without blinking once, the $3/each price tag didn't slow me down one bit. Corey just laughed at me, used to my quirky shopping habits. Now..I still have these cups, and I use them all the time, but did I need to buy 25 $3 cups??? Again, I couldn't walk away from them.

3. Last, I will use a very recent and dangerous example of my compulsive shopping habits...Janet Hill. While perusing Whitney English's beautiful website 2 years ago, I saw in her Inspiration section, a lovely painting of a desk and a blurb about Janet Hill, a Canadian painter who was gaining popularity on Etsy. I went straight over to her Etsy site and was mesmerized. Day after day, I checked that site but the paintings were always sold! I quickly learned that you have to literally stalk her site and around 4pm, she would post the newest painting and then you have to grab it quickly! So, I decided one day, I was going to get a painting if it killed me. Luckily, I work for a friend and she just looked the other way as I sat in front of my computer for over an hour, pressing the refresh button every 5 seconds. Suddenly, a painting popped up and I clicked the buy button so fast, it made my head spin. Luckily, it was a perfect painting for me.

and a couple of weeks later, this one came up...

then one smaller one and then I realized I was going to have an entire living room full of these paintings. Thank goodness she made it a chore to buy them, or that is exactly what would have happened. I have purchased a few prints since but common sense has prevailed and I am running out of room to hang things.

These days, my shopping has been minimal. I am in spending freeze mode, so not so much fun. Hopefully soon, I will be back with my wish list ready to go! This all came about after a dinner with friends last week when one of them announced that she had been going to therapy for a while and it was fantastic, an hour of talking to someone about yourself. This had me thinking...does my insurance cover therapy?

My Brain is Tired

If you haven't opened a website..I have to tell you, it's exhausting! I put so many items on initially but then realized that I had to change certain attributes and so I spent all weekend sitting on my couch fixing everything, and I am not 100% sure I am done! I am certainly not done adding items, I feel like I have barely scratched the surface on that front. I have been adding more things every night.
For all of July, I am extending free regular shipping for all items, so if you haven't taken a peek, click here and you can see what all my fuss is about!

Free Slurpees Today!

Today, July 11th (7-11) Slurpees are free at 7-11 stores!! I grew up going to Norfolk, Virginia visiting my Grandparents in the summer, who happened to live in a townhouses directly behind a 7-11. What could be better than having a Grandfather who put all his spare change in a very convenient bowl on his dresser and being within 150 feet of the mecca of all candy and sugar, 7-11 as a child? Not much. We were there all the time and were complete Slurpee fanatics.

This has always been one of my favorite pictures.

I Guess I Wasn't Done!

Are you kidding me? This picture just popped up on Just Jared (one of my favorite sites). If I didn't already covet a Goyard bag, you can bet it is at the top of my list now. How cool is Gwyneth with her initials on it?? This is actually the first time I have seen her really acknowledge her married last name!

I promise, no more Gwyneth for a while...hope you have a great weekend! xo

Not To Overdo it...

I don't want to over-do the Gwyneth blog posts, but here she is on the cover of the upcoming August issue of Vogue, looking spectacular, of course. Next year, she is coming out with a cookbook My Father's Daughter-something she mentioned on the Oprah show two years ago. The article in Vogue is so funny, the writer is clearly a fan, very excited to meet her and can't help but gush over her a little bit.
Doing her research...
Gorgeous kitchen in her New York apartment

Gwyneth is fabulous...love her!

Key Lime Cake

My family has two different "family cakes". The cakes you have for special occasions and birthdays. We grew up eating a chocolate dump cake, as it is called by my Aunt Betty, which is like a heavenly large chocolate brownie with the most delicious icing. It gets more moist each day and hits it peak on day number 3. This cake never lasted very long in my house but was and will always remain a huge favorite.

In the last few years, my Mom has perfected a Key Lime Cake that is outrageous. We used to have a key lime tree in our back yard that she was so proud of until the City of Miami men came in their jumpsuits and removed all the citrus trees due to a canker outbreak. That was a sad day for sure. Anyway, this cake is sweet but not too sweet, moist, and just perfect in every way. When I surprised my Mom for Mother's Day in May and walked into the house, this cake was in the oven and I could smell it right away. What a nice welcome home treat! Unfortunately, she was taking it to a meeting the next day and I secretly was crossing my fingers that she would bring at least a little bit home. (she did-yum). Here is the recipe...

Key Lime Cake

2 Tbsp. Key Lime Juice (try to find the real key lime bottled juice)
2 Layer package of Duncan Hinds Lemon Cake Mix
4 oz. package of Lemon Instant Pudding
4 eggs beaten
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup water

Combine all, beat until smooth. Pour into a greased 9"x13" pan
Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes.

Take out of the oven and pierce holes all over the cake. (I use a Shish Kabob skewer)
Combine 2 cups confectioners sugar and 1/3 cup Key Lime Juice
(if you don't want this so sweet do half of this)
Pour over warm cake and the glaze sinks into the holes.

Great to serve with lemon sherbert.

Newport Weekend

My weekend post is delayed due to my camera cord being left in Newport. Of all the things to forget, are you kidding me? In a panic (not necessarily because I don't think my roommates are capable of mailing it back-this is actually a test to see which of my roommates read this blog)I headed straight to Radio Shack and bought for $19.99 an unbelievable new gadget that reads all size media cards and connects straight to the computer. This is my new favorite thing.

My arrival on Friday was fantastic, the minute I walked off the plane, I could feel the cooler temperature and it put such a smile on my face. Brooke picked me up and we headed straight to lunch at 41 North, an beautiful hotel that just opened and looks and feels like something straight out of South Beach. The outside bar was open last year and we went many times, all the staff wear white collared shirts and shorts with a scarf tied around their neck, it is so cute. The view is great.
So, our lunch was great and then she dropped me off at the house. I had seen it once over Memorial Day but not inside. It is so much nicer than our house in the past and the big bonus is the roof deck, a perfect amount of space for everyone to hang out and watch all the activity down below.

We went out Friday night to a party at 41 North and then headed to our other usual spots. I felt like I just left last weekend instead of last Labor Day! Saturday morning, we went to my favorite breakfast place, Atlantic Grille.

You have to wait in line usually to get a table, but it is so worth it. They have the best pancakes in the world. I always get Second Beach, which is too much food, but just delicious. Then, we headed to Gooseberry Beach. It was THE most beautiful day and even though I applied a ton of sunscreen, I got burnt. The line at the snack shack was too long and by 3:30, we packed it up and headed home.

The rest of the weekend was a mix of the beach, shopping and going out. On Saturday night, 41 North had their grand opening party. We went by and I finally got to meet Kiel James Patrick, who was holding court at the downstairs bar. He was so cute.

On the 4th, we went back to the beach for a bit-it seemed necessary-I hid under an umbrella the whole time. It was crazy packed. Then, we got ready for our party. We had some friends over on the roof deck for cocktails and snacks. The sunset happened to be spectacular and the fireworks, perfect.

Monday, I did some shopping and will post later about some of my favorite stores. I will head back up North next week for my real vacation. Can't wait!

Oh..to travel these days

This morning, I left Newport to come home. I had a fantastic time this weekend and knew I needed to set up travel arrangements to get myself to the Providence airport but kept thinking I would deal with it "later". When making my reservation, I tried desperately to get the non-stop flight to and from Fort Lauderdale on Southwest (2 bags free!) and the only options coming home were 7:10am Tuesday and 6:30pm Monday. Trying to maximize my time on vacation, I opted for the 7:10am flight, not only giving me an extra night away but saving money as well.

I think I might have saved $40 but when my alarm went off this morning at 4:25am, I would have paid $100 to keep sleeping for another hour or two. I have done this so many times, booking early flights and then regretting it horribly later on. The only shuttle that would get me there on time was at 5am!! Luckily, my roommates are very nice and Denice offered to get up and drive me. I had B15 for a boarding slot, not bad for forgetting to call and check in Monday morning, so all in all, Southwest was pretty great.

My gold bangles are another story altogether. I have to go through the embarrassing pat down because they don't come off and my bra apparently has massive underwire parts that make the wand go crazy beeping. I usually don't care, but today it was so early and the lady's military grade inspection looking for hidden weapons was incredibly annoying.

I guess if Kate Beckinsale has to go through it, I am in good company!

That is all of my travel woes...I have to vent once or twice a year. I am sure there are a few of you out there that can feel my pain!

Fishing in a new pond...

Fishing in the Chesapeake Bay, circa 1979

Today, I leave for Newport for the weekend. I will be traveling back and forth for July, escaping the Miami heat and enjoying the beautiful weather up North. It is good to get a change of scenery every once in a while, especially when you are single. I look at this month as fishing in a new pond! Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend. xo

I wish I could say it was totally finished, but my website it up and there are a ton of things listed. I am still adding things every day, so check back, but I am thrilled to have it finally open for business. What I really need is a real camera. That might be my next big purchase. Or, I could date a photographer, that would be convenient!
This weekend, I will be up North enjoying slightly cooler weather and I am so excited. I love the fourth of July and this year, our Newport house has two roof decks, perfect for fireworks watching!!
If you find any problems or errors on my website, please email me...I am still working out the kinks. Thanks so much!!!! xo
